BACK-COVER BLURBS

Many authors agree that there is nothing less fun than writing your novel’s back-cover copy. (I can only conclude that those authors have never got their sock wet on a cold day and then had to put their shoe back on.) Your blurb (the text that goes on the back of your paperback and on your book’s online sales pages) is vitally important for hooking your readers, but it can be difficult to get right.

Luckily for you, there are strange people out there who love helping authors with their blurbs, and I’m one of them. I can help you hone your copy into something that will knock your readers’ (hopefully dry) socks off.

Here’s how it works.

You send me the following:

  • A rough back-cover blurb that you’ve written. It doesn’t matter if you think it’s terrible – it will tell me what you want to say about your story
  • A synopsis of your plot (1–2 pages)
  • A few sample chapters so I can get a feel for your writing style
  • A list of similar titles to your book if you have them.

I’ll provide you with 3 different versions of a back-cover blurb – these might be, for example, a lightly copy-edited version of your original, a version that is more heavily edited but still sticks roughly to the same information and structure, and one with a completely different approach; exactly how much editing/rewriting is involved will depend on your original copy and what is likely to work best for your target readership.

You might decide that one of those blurbs is just what you’re after, or you might want to play around with them until you’ve got something that you feel is perfect for your book. I will then proofread your final version to make sure there are no pesky stray commas or sneaky typos.

Turnaround time is approximately 1 week, plus 1–2 days for the final proofread. The service will cost you £50 and save you hours of banging your head against your desk in despair. (Please note that this service is for fiction books only.)

Follow the links below to see examples of blurbs I had a hand in. CAUTION: I cannot be held responsible for the height of your TBR pile should you end up wanting to buy these books. But if you do, contact me to discuss how I can do the same for yours!

Kia is a delight to work with. In only a handful of sentences, she manages to capture the essence of my story. Her fresh perspective and insight always helps me create the best, most gripping version of my blurb.
